sentiments

sentimentality comes at midnight
3 a.m. wishes to an empty room
when the darkness is broken by stars
and backlit by the light of our laptops

and it's time like this
when we can truly be honest with ourselves
life isn't exactly a fairy tale
and wishes don't always come true

we might forget the past for a while
or even forget ourselves along the way
but it's not quite midnight yet
and perhaps these are only half-truths

sentimentality isn't our thing
and wishing stars are just falling dreams
the darkness is all we have left to remind us
that the light of our screens just isn't enough

i tried 3 a.m. truths
and honesty flung to the sky
   but sentimentality

       just isn't my thing
